Mitsuwa Japanese Apple Pies (Konan Pop-Up)
Ranking all 3 flavors of the Konan Japanese apple pies from Mitsuwa Marketplace — classic apple, chocolate apple, and sweet potato.
Pros
- Super flaky puff pastry with incredible lamination
- Amazing aroma — you can smell them as soon as you walk in
- Classic apple pie is very sweet with a glossy, beautiful finish
- Like a very upgraded version of McDonald's apple pie
Cons
- A little pricey at $5.90 per piece
- Chocolate and sweet potato flavors are pretty subtle
- Limited-time pop-up — not always available
When I walked into Mitsuwa today, I was hit with this amazing scent, and it turns out it was because of these Japanese apple pies. They're a pop-up at the San Jose location for a limited time, so I got the three flavors.
The Flavors, Ranked
1. Classic Apple Pie
Look at that glossy shine and finish. She's glowing. The puff pastry is super flaky, and the apples are very, very sweet. It's like a very upgraded version of McDonald's apple pie, except this is $6 each.
2. Chocolate & Apple
A more unique pairing with incredible lamination too. It's not a very strong chocolate flavor, but it's also not too sweet. Kinda tastes like an apple pie with a chocolatey aftertaste.
3. Sweet Potato
The filling is basically just a smooth sweet potato paste. It's good, but it doesn't have a very strong sweet potato flavor. It's pretty subtle.
The Verdict
My favorite of the three definitely has to be the classic apple pie. At $5.90 per piece, I do think these are a little bit pricey, but the aroma alone is seriously irresistible.
